It’s no secret- there’s a lot of garbage out there. From plastic bags and bottles to forest-guzzling paper mills, everyday products are wreaking havoc on our environment in a plethora of ways. Fortunately, people are becoming increasingly aware of this. The necessity for sustainable, earth-friendly and recyclable materials in the manufacture of everyday items has become apparent, and consumer demands are increasing as a result. Enter Bamboo. Having existed as an alternative material for millenniums, this amazingly strong and versatile plant is a naturally Eco-friendly resource. Cultivating bamboo requires no pesticides, herbicides or irrigation, and instead relies on natural rainfall just like the lawn in your backyard; bamboo has a self-replenishing growth cycle, so no need for replanting activities that result in soil erosion or damage to the surrounding environment. Furthermore, bamboo produces up to 35% more oxygen than trees, thus helping to offset carbon-dioxide emissions. It’s easy to see why bamboo is a favorite when it comes to sustainable materials. A former student of Environmental Law, Irom Kishan Mangang, was searching for an answer to sustainable resources. He started venturing out to create products which were useful in the present and did not harm the future as well, and in the end decided to use Bamboo as their ubiquitous material. From there began his journey of bamboo craft, and after having mastered the skill, he trained many artisans in Manipur out of which around 4-5 men joined to work with him. He sources small common bamboo from nearby Kongba Turel mapal area and other good quality thick bamboo from Phinan Maring village, Tarubi Chanung etc. His dreams of one day setting up a better work-shed and store, so that he is able to better showcase and display his crafts to attract more customers.
