Ancient customs and traditions are abundant in the history of a traditionally rich, Sikkim. They have an age old history of great craftsmanship. Over sixty monasteries in Sikkim still save the old.
Spiritual rituals of Sikkim are lush repositories of fine arts. Some of the most popular arts of the state counts from handlooms, woollen carpet weaving, mask making, metal craft wood carving and Thangka paintings. The most prominent ethnic tribes in Sikkim are Lepchas, Sherpas and Bhutia and three of the tribes practise the arts and crafts, with perfection.
.
Handloom weaving in Sikkim is almost the same as Lepcha weave, which is a traditional art of Sikkim.
The frame of the weave is made from bamboo or various types of wood which is available in the specific time. The Lepcha population is highly concentrated in the northern area of Sikkim. This is the area which consists of confluence of the rivers, named Lachen and Lachung in the Dzongu region of North Sikkim.
Sikkim has a general cold climate, throughout the year and the natives need to be well-equipped with some good woollen clothes to combat that. Woollen clothes are usually made out of the fabric, woven by Lepcha women. The Lepchas reuse and transform the used woollen blankets into items like shawls, bags, dolls and jackets.
Traditionally sheep wool is used, but with further intervention from the Directorate of Handlooms and Handicrafts, cotton and acrylic has also come into use now.
