Mangka – Reviving Traditional Manipuri Music!
Her music may have traditional roots but she definitely has a huge young fan following! Popularly known as Mangka by her fans, this young girl in her early 20’s from Manipur has equally achieved wowing modern audiences from the ‘Facebook Generation’ as much as the older crowd. She has a strong presence in Social Media with her Facebook fan page having close to 16,000 likes! Mangka’s music style has foundations in the Manipuri traditional instrument the ‘Pena’, Lai Haraoba (festival celebrated to please traditional deities) and Moirang-sei. Gifted with a mesmerizing voice, Mangka’s beautiful onstage costumes combined with elegant ‘Lai Haraoba’ dance moves has succeeded in popularizing Manipuri traditional performing arts to a wider mainstream audience.
Mangka Mayanglambam had acquired the basic knowledge of folk singing from her father Mangangsana, a well-known Manipuri traditional Pena singer. She had learned the Hindustani Sangeet from late Guru Mairembam Jiten Singh and is now learning Manipuri dance at the Government Dance College in Imphal. She has collaborated with some major performing art institutes of Manipur such as Manipur Dramatic Union, Kalakshetra Manipur and Kanglei Mime Repertory Theatre.
This album ‘Chingda Satpi’ which has taken almost a year to complete, is a collection of 10 tracks which have been sourced from some of the finest unforgettable folk melodies of Manipur. Mangka’s own father who is also the artistic director of Laihui, a traditional music ensemble based in Imphal has given music to the album. The album comes in a CD+DVD package exquisitely designed by Design Stash, a premium design house from Nagaland. “Folk music is generally not composed. They are a spontaneous reaction to our environment or our work culture. We have tried to resonate a feeling of nostalgia through the imageries and illustrations. I was surprised when the talented young Naga designers brought 3 books on Manipuri traditional textiles for reference” says the exalted producer Doren.
‘Chingda Satpi’ has been produced by raising funds through pre-order and generous support from friends in India and around the world.
